Hey Boo Boo, let’s head to Jellystone!

1-2 week camping trips can be awe-inspiring. When I think of camping I typically envision getting out into nature, and seeing something fewer people see. How accurate that is remains to be seen.

There are times though, when we just need a comma. That little separation from one sentence in our daily lives from the next. That break to recharge. A chance to take a breath. And sometimes it creeps up on you. Sometimes it is expected. Whichever it happens to be, sometimes it is nice to just get a couple days out of town, or even at a local camp site. Not an all out excursion, but a mini camp vacation.

Our time at Jellystone was just one of those occasions.  I had never even known that This was a chain of campgrounds around the US. I was familiar with the name Jellystone Park the same way many people are. From one of my favorite mischievous bear and his little sidekick. Yogi Bear and Boo Boo.

We headed out on a Saturday for a very short hour and a half drive south out of Louisville until we arrived at our exit in Cave City Kentucky. We had passed by this exit several times on our way to Nashville. I know this because we would always tell the boys to look at the giant dinosaurs at the top of the exit. I never had realized that there was a campground just under two miles from here.

After a very quick check in at the Ranger Station, we got to our campsite where our friends who we were joining had arrived an hour or so earlier. After a hasty tent assembly, we changed into our swimwear and rushed to the awesome little lake behind the Ranger Station. For the next couple of days we spent relaxing at the lake and the pool. We would go to the camp site for lunch. It makes it quite easy when you divvy up three different meals in a day between three families. This Jellystone had a very cool playground with inflated bouncies in ground, a tire swing and next to the playground was a cool 4 wheel peddle car track, where we could jump on and race around until our heart was content. Nearby they had a bazooka ball course (think paintball with bigger, softer ammo that shoots with much less force.

There were two swimming pools, one with a splash pad. Very well maintained and very enjoyable to hang out at on a hot, yet fairly low humidity couple of days for summer in Kentucky. There is a community center that offers free crafting times in the morning for kids, an amphitheater  that showed movies and cartoons in the evening. All o f this was rounded out by small and imprecise, yet fun mini golf course, and a smaller lake which allows for catch and release fishing.

Our second and third days out of three we spent an hour on the  Wibit. A large floating island in a roped of section of the lake. This contained a obstacles to attempt crossing without falling in the water, a couple of smallish slides into the water and a blob, where one sits on the cushion and another, preferably larger jumps onto the said blob, launching the first as high and far as possible. Quite a lot of fun. This hour of fun was a very reasonable $8 extra per person for the hour, but worth every penny.

Jellystone also had two waterslides, which unfortunately for our visit were closed for repairs. Perhaps the next time we need to take a breath and recharge, it will be open and we can send ourselves flying down memory lane.
